Vocabulary 3rd nine weeks

Vocabulary

Mitosis() - when a body cell makes a copy of itself making 2 daughter cells each with 46
chromosomes.

In science, we learned that one of the two things that cells do to reproduce is mitosis.

Mitosis has 2 daughter cells and each cell has 46 chromosomes.

Meiosis() - when a body cell makes a copy of itself and splits 2 times to make 4 daughter

cells each with 23 chromosomes which are eggs and sperm for reproduction.

One of the things we learned about a cell is that it can do meiosis, which means that it ends up making 4 daughter cells with 23 chromosomes each.
Meiosis has 4 daughter cells and each cell has 23 chromosomes.

DNA() - deoxyribonucleic acid - material in your cells nucleus that controls what goes on

in the cells and is a blue print for what the body will become naturally.

When scientists need to figure something out about a person or study something, they'll look at a person's DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, which is the body's blue print.

When you watch C.S.I Miami they use your DNA to find out who you are.

Cancer ()- where a persons own cells start growing faster than normal causing a ball of

cells to form called a tumor.

When you have cancer, one thing you can do to help cure it is go through chemotherapy.

Cancer is a genetic diseases.

 Chromosome ()
- an X shaped chunk of DNA that contains information for about 1,000
traits.

Can you believe that one chromosome caries over 100 traits.

Gene() - a small narrow band of DNA on a chromosome that controls one trait.

A gene and a trait are the same thing.

Mutation() - damage to or a change in DNA or to much or to little DNA in the nucleus of a

cell that can result in birth defects and cancer.  Most mutations are bad.

Some mutations are good, my cousin did not get a good mutation or a neutral mutation.

Downs Syndrome or Trisomy 21() - a mutation where a person has an extra chromosome

in each cell which can lead to mental and physical defects.

My little cousin has down syndrome and it is shard for him to learn.

Eukaryotic Cells() - any cell that has a nucleus

 Eukaryotic cell has a nucleus.

Prokaryotic cells() - any cell that does not have a nucleus.

A Prokaryotic cell does not have a cell.

Testosterone() - hormone that makes boys look and act like boys.
They put testosterone in steroids.

Caste System() - a system in India where people are born into one of 5 groups.  Your
group determines what job you can have and you must marry someone from your group.

appease() - pacify or placate (someone) by acceding to their demands.

real numbers() -  are numbers that can be found on the number line. This includes both the rational and irrational numbers.

whole numbers() - a number without fractions; an integer.

natural numbers() - the positive integers (whole numbers) 1, 2, 3, etc., and sometimes zero as well.

rational numbers()- is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, p and q, with the denominator q not equal to zero. Since q may be equal to 1, every integer

irrational numbers()-  is any real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers.

Connotation()an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
